The Curiosity Walk
Included in The Whole Shelf
The best thing about a curious child is that they'll find something interesting in a car park. This is a set of ten small missions that give them a reason to look.
Every one works in an ordinary garden, a local park, or a street with a few plants along it. No equipment, no special destination, nothing to buy beyond a pencil.
The missions:
- Count the rings on a cut log or stump
- Find three different leaf shapes
- Listen for five different sounds
- Find a shape you don't expect — a circle, a spiral, a straight line
- Watch a cloud for two minutes
- Find three different textures
- Spot a shadow and guess the time
- Find a plant growing somewhere unexpected
- Watch the moon change over a week
- Find evidence an animal has been somewhere
Each mission has room to record what you found and a box to draw it or tape something in. At the foot of every page there's a short here's why note for the adult — enough to answer the follow-up question without turning it into a lesson.
There's a seasonal note at the back, because doing the same mission twice, months apart, is its own kind of interesting. And a blank page for missions of your own.
One note: these are for doing together with an adult, and nothing found outdoors should be tasted or eaten.
